To be fair, it's a continuation of a mechanic in 3D Land where some enemies had the effects of the game's signature power (in that case,
Raccoon Suit).
For example, it takes some cues from Super Mario 3D Land, such as letting you store a spare power - up on and launch it from the touchscreen, giving you the invulnerability - conferring White
Raccoon Suit power - up if you die too many times on a given level, and making you collect Star Coins to open up bonus stages.
The Raccoon Suit is much in evidence, and most worlds have a haunted house (involving shenanigans with real and fake doors) and a mid-level tower that culminates in a mini-boss-battle.
While Super Mario Bros. 3 gets
the Raccoon Suit, the Tanooki Suit, Hammer Suit and Frog Suits are nowhere to be found.
We now have new and interesting power - ups in each iteration of the series, and SMB 3 with its inclusion of Kuribo's Shoe, the Tanooki Suit,
the Raccoon Suit, the Hammer Brother Suit, and the Frog Suit are to thank for that.
Gameplay was shown in a trailer, confirming use of
the raccoon suit, as was teased at GDC.
Seeing covers from time to time can really take a gent back to the classy days of the Super Mario 3
raccoon suit.

For example, the mentioned
raccoon - like Tanooki
Suit gives the player the ability to fly just like the Super Leaf power - up, but it also gives the ability of transformation into a statue (and while he is in this state, Mario can not be harmed by any of the enemies or the other obstacles), and the Hammer
Suit also has another function — Mario can create a shield in order to protect himself from the fireballs.
We'll have to wait to see more information as well as a gameplay reveal, but you can check out a flying
raccoon with a glide
suit and the cinematic trailer below in the meantime.
Unlike normal Koopas, Dry Bones is immune to the tail of
Raccoon Mario and the fireballs of Fire Mario but can be defeated with a Star or, if the player has access to one, a Hammer
Suit.

suits, whatever, and afix them to your body in a playful manner to achieve special powers while looking damn good at the same time.
The tanooki
suit, the
raccoon - like
suit originally from Super Mario Brothers 3, returns for Mario and even enemy characters.
But in the US version, Mario would return to being Super Mario if he took the hit while in
Raccoon or Fiery form, or in one of his
suits.
Guess they didn't want to put both the Tanooki
Suit and
Raccoon Leaf in this game.
Oh yeah, Fire Flower, Frog
Suit,
Raccoon Leaf, Ice Flower... Talking of which, Mario and Luigi Partners in Time also had the Ice Flower, it even introduced the item to the series as a whole!
Offering simultaneous four - player gameplay, it also introduces the new Cat
Suit and brings back the Super Leaf which turns our heroes into a
raccoon.
