If, as is likely to be the case, fewer black and Hispanic students are enrolled in advanced courses, will that
finding be interpreted as discriminatory or a nearly inevitable result of the very
racial achievement gap we are trying to reduce?
One confusing but important
finding is that that simply closing the
racial achievement gap at each individual college would not be enough to ensure that black and white students graduate at the same rate overall.
The University of Chicago study
found that after all the changes made by Vallas and Duncan, the reforms, «have done nothing to close the
racial gaps in
achievement levels.
It
found that poverty, not race, is the real challenge for segregated schools, and that improving school quality is key to closing
racial achievement gaps.
Lastly, we
find that high school
achievement measures explain much of the
racial gaps in BA attainment and annual earnings and some of the
gaps by family background, though they account for little of the continuing gender
gap in annual earnings.
Attorney James Hall, president of the Milwaukee chapter of the NAACP, rattled off a host of statistics about Milwaukee's low ranking on a number of quality - of - life metrics, from the recent
finding by the Annie E. Casey Foundation that Wisconsin is the worst state in the nation for African American children, to our sky - high levels of mass incarceration of black men, our nation - leading
