Bella and Hugh Howey particularly
talked about the book itself as marketing — the brilliant
story, delivering on the promise to the
reader, a consistent production schedule, covers that evoke the emotion of the
story, the author's name, the title and sub-title, the sales description and keywords, email and newsletters.
Of course, Hugh Howey makes the point often that the outliers are not the success
story of self - publishing, that we should be
talking about the thousands of indies making good money, decent money, reaching
readers and loving their lives as authors.
This is the difficult subject to
talk about because all new writers must go through a learning curve to get craft up to certain «levels» that will allow
readers to follow your
story and stay involved with your
story.

I like to start by
talking about the situation my
reader finds him or herself in, then use my
story to explain how I was in the same situation, and how I can help them.
I think that the vast majority of lay
readers who read the headlines and the text of
stories on climate sensitivity do not know this and they simply presume that the scientists concerned are
talking about their absolute best estimates of the possible temperature increases which may be faced.
I was hoping that the book would be accessible to a pretty broad range of
readers because I really wanted to use my personal
story as sort of this reluctant and accidental public figure in the debate over climate change, to
talk about the bigger issues, the reality of the problem, the threat that it represents, the need to have a good faith discussion
about what to do
about it.
Maybe they're
talking about a bill in Australia too, but the «correspondents in Canberra» who wrote the
story figure that their
readers don't know what a bill is.
It needs to tell enough of your
story to compel
readers to want to know more
about you, and to want to
talk to you.
