real source of joy for little ones, and a great time to teach them about the origins of their

Despite the discouragement that can come with these parent vs child
food wars, please remember that any opportunity to nourish your

real food is never wasted, even if it takes some time (and maybe a few tantrums) to get there.

I will probably be making this daily on Passover — it's hard to find
real food snacks kosher for passover — there's only so many eggs my
kids will eat!
I've been trying to be really mindful of how much I eat these days (see my I've Been Slacking... post), but these muffins make for a wholesome,

Staff were very informed and knowledgeable when discussing
food allergies and intolerances, which was a bonus for us but would be a
real relief for parents of allergic
kids.
Probably because that kind of change is hard, and demonizing the little guy — the local student nutrition director and local radio DJ last year, or the small restaurant operator and local school superintendent this year — is easier and less risky than taking on the
real «bad guys» — the elected officials, the giant Agribusiness players, the networks that broadcast all of those fast

food ads to our
kids and also, oh yes, broadcast Jamie Oliver's shows....
And there are also many, many things we could be doing to encourage children's acceptance of healthier school meals: imposing meaningful restrictions on children's junk
food advertising; requiring
food education in schools — not just nutrition education, but offering
kids a
real understanding of our
food system, and overtly inoculating them against the allure of hyper - processed and fast
food; teaching all children basic cooking skills; getting more gardens into schools; encouraging restaurants to ditch the standard breaded - and - fried children's menu; imposing taxes on soda (and even junk
food); improving
food access; and so much more.
