Obviously, the island got its name from the black - tip
reef sharks that live off the northwest point of the island, but you will also see bull
sharks and whale
sharks when you
dive here too!
There are as many as 25
dive sites on the Gili Islands with varying topography and diverse marine life which includes
reef sharks, turtles lionfish, cuttlefish, sea snakes, scorpion fish, octopus, moray eels, and many types of rays, among others.It is possible to
dive in Gili Islands throughout the year, and the best time is between the month of May — October, during the dry season.

Although a very shallow
reef to
dive in, there are larch coral and rock formations in the deeper sections that are big enough for bamboo
sharks to hide underneath.
We have been seeing hammerheads, mobula rays, white tip
reef sharks, barracuda, devil rays, trevally, tuna and more and more schools of squid mainly at the
dive site «Gili Sarang».
During our
dives we spotted some
reef sharks, a massive cow tailed ray and the weird looking but fantastically named wobbegong
shark.
Many
dives reserve surprises though, and we had a couple of very cool sightings this last week: some black - tip and white - tip
reef sharks, an eagle ray (which I finally saw after being told there's been one maybe... 10 times?)
This week in Belongas... we have an outstanding amount of Redtooth trigger fish, sea cobras, nudibranchs, white tip
reef sharks and eagle rays but this week its been the mobula rays that have made diving special as they have been counted on every
dive.
With some great visibility we have also been seeing some amazing things on the afternoon
dives with hordes of Blacktip
reef shark, Yellowfin tuna, Giant trevally and Bathfish.

shark dives take participants to the island's south coast, where they can interact with groups of a dozen or more Caribbean
reef sharks.
The First
dive of the Days is done at the
Shark Hole, while the second and third
dives are done at the pristine
reef near Tobacco Caye or South Water Caye.
Outer
reef slopes provide dramatic drops in exceptional clear waters, while the channels that cut through the
reefs attract schooling fish and
sharks on tidal changes, creating exciting opportunities for drift
dives and big animal viewing.

This shallow cut in the
reef south of Hol Chan is a popular
dive spot for those who wish to see
sharks and rays up close and personal.
Kona has some great sharky
dive sites with tiger
sharks, white tip
reef sharks and even the occasional hammerhead
shark.
The most famous point
dive is at Uepi, where currents flowing from Marovo Lagoon carry nutrients that attract a food chain that starts small and through large schools of trevally and barracuda, to rays and
