The Transportation Department
regulates the nation's vehicles, airplanes, railroads, pipelines, ports and highways - including whether to allow the use of small unmanned
aerial vehicles, or
drones, over people and whether U.S. fuel efficiency standards should be revised.
The
drone -
regulating Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicts that by 2020, as many as seven million of these unmanned
aerial vehicles, as they're formally called, will be hovering around.
Editor's Note: Recently the FAA issued an update that reasserted the agency's authority to
regulate drones and restated their previous assertion that unmanned
aerial vehicles are not allowed for any commercial purposes, unless expressly authorized by the agency.
