Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos told reporters this morning that his conference was firmly opposed to the
womens reproductive health act, an expansion of abortion rights that is at the centerpiece of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's equality for women legislative package.
These key Democratic priorities include raising the minimum wage, electoral reform, and the women's
reproductive health act; which are now subject to bargaining with the Republicans.
«We feel a high responsibility to speak up for the baby in the womb,» said Dolan, who says
the reproductive health act seems to be «predicated on almost a paranoia that the abortion license is being restrained».
Pro-choice advocates promoting the women's
reproductive health act say they are counting on Governor Andrew Cuomo to help the bill become law this year.
«I fully support
the reproductive health act,» said Cuomo.
Cardinal Dolan, speaking after his meeting with Cuomo in mid March, says he told the governor that he was «worried» about
the reproductive health act.
The Democratic dominated Assembly likely has the votes for
the reproductive health act to pass.
The reproductive health act, first introduced by former Governor Eliot Spitzer, would set in state law the right to accept or refuse contraception and the right to have a late term abortion, if a doctor determines that the health of the mother is at risk.
Democrats in the Assembly have annually passed versions of
the reproductive health act, which creates an affirmative right to abortion.
She says opponents are trying to paint the portion of the Women's Equality Act known as
the reproductive health act as something «scary,» but she says they are wrong.
Gallagher says if what was previously known as
the reproductive health act were introduced as a stand alone bill, it would fail in the legislature.
She says they will target key Senators who are either pro-choice or live in predominantly pro-choice districts who oppose
the reproductive health act in the November elections.
NARAL did not want
the reproductive health act separated from the rest.
