A
dog adopted from a disorderly
rescue may come
with behavior and health
problems.
Often shelters choose to work
with rescue groups who know spit about
behavior and training because those people can get the
dogs into fosters and homes, rather than actual trainers whose focus is resolution of
problem behaviors through training so the
dog can STAY in the new home, and stay safely for all concerned, the
dogs and the owners.
It was a new experience to train a working scent
dog as well as to resolve the
behavior problems Mara came
with from the
rescue.
Others are fine
with rescue dogs from a shelter, but I have known more than one
dog who was returned to the shelter because the new owner could not deal
with the
behavior problems the
dog came
with (and the reason they were initially turned in).
A word of warning regarding
dogs with severe anxiety
problems (often a
rescue / shelter
dog): some
dogs may go to pieces in a crate; they will shake, slobber, struggle and exhibit extreme escape
behavior.
The day of play
with a purpose included canine competitions in the categories of Best
Rescue, Best Trick, Waggiest Tail, Child's Best Friend and Golden Oldie; a demonstration of pup
behavior problems and people / pet communication from canine
behavior specialist Jez Rose, who organized the event; a demo from Hearing
Dogs for Deaf People and a presentation of the T - Touch technique by trainer Sarah Fisher.

Not long after adopting him, the lucky pup's parents started an animal training group called Handsome Dan's
Rescue, which trains shelter
dogs with behavior problems in order to make them more appealing to adopters.
Because of the work I've done
with several shelters and
rescue groups (rehabilitating
dogs who, otherwise, face imminent euthanasia for
behavior problems), I was called right away, when a member of my breed of choice was turned into a local shelter as a stray.
Although, we can not guarantee that there are no health or
behavior problems with the
dogs we
rescue, we have done our very best to assure that each
dog in the program is a good candidate for permanent placement through adoption.
