at Arch St. Methodist Church to kick of a campaign for sustainable community
schools as a transformative
alternative to both privatization in the form of unaccountable charter
schools and the
resource - starved, test - driven neighborhood
schools that are currently in Philadelphia.
It would please me to be able to suggest to you that there is, in fact, a grand plan to improve our public
school system (rather than abandon it in favor of a hodgepodge of lower - performing
alternatives), to reinvigorate the teaching profession, and to direct
resources to the campuses and students where they are most needed, but that vision hasn't yet been articulated or embraced
at the state level.
These Connecticut
school superintendents are actually developing
alternative programing for students who are opting out of the testing or,
at the very least, providing students with access to the
school library or a particular
resource room where they can attend to their
school work.
