The sites further to the north such as the
Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole and Osprey
Reef are really the only ones that will impress
in terms of marine life, topography and action!
This 55 mile (90 kilometre) turquoise chain of
ribbon reefs is the most prized dive region
in the northern section of the Great Barrier
Reef.
The
Ribbon Reefs sit right on the edge of the Continental Shelf, bringing
in an upwelling of nutrient rich water that attracts large fish populations and diverse coral species.
On dive sites like Shark Point, Manta Point, Deep Turbo and Gili Air wall we often see
reef sharks, manta rays (
in season January - March), turtles, eagle rays, moray garden and
ribbon eels.
Probably one of the most famous dive spot
in the
Ribbons Reefs, the Pixie Pinnacle is only about 15 meters
in diameter but the area is toured by liveaboards because of its spectacular marine life, making the Pixie Pinnacle ideal and best for both day and night diving.

These whales hang around the
Ribbon Reefs of the Great Barrier
Reef between May and September, peaking
in early July.
Set directly on the Great Barrier
Reef, Lizard Island is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving
in the world, including the famous Cod Hole or the

Cod hole is situated
in the Coral Sea, on the
Ribbon Reef number 10, which is a part of the Great Barrier
