Ridgeback breed, and before getting in touch with any breeders, you need to ask some questions of yourself.
The Ridgeback breed was further developed in the 1700's through crosses with native wild dogs and immigrant dogs, but the exact ancestry of
the Ridgeback breed is not known.
The hunters began to selectively breed for the ridge and, thus, the Rhodesian
Ridgeback breed was born!
[20] In 1954 the first Challenge Certificates were awarded to dogs shown as Rhodesian Ridgebacks at United Kingdom competitions, toward their subsequent recognition by The Kennel Club of Great Britain, [20] and in 1955 the American Kennel Club recognised the Rhodesian

Ridgeback have little in common with any African indigenous dogs of today which suggests that these two
breeds may not originated in Africa.
While many thought this
breed was the only
breed featuring the ridge, a couple lesser - known
breeds also have the trait, such as the Phu Quok Dog and the Thai
Ridgeback.
A number of different
breeds contributed to the gene pool of the Rhodesian
Ridgeback including the Bloodhound, Greyhound, Pointer, Mastiff, Airedale, and Africa's Hottentot Dog, among others.
Ridgebacks are independent thinker, stubborn and are a confident
breed.
Ridgebacks are an active
breed and needs an owner that can provide a lot of stimulation and interaction.
Large game hounds like the Rhodesian
Ridgeback were

According to the Michigan State University Thyroid Database, Rhodesian
Ridgebacks have the 15th highest rate of hypothyroidism of 140
breeds, with up to 21 % of
Ridgebacks estimated to have low thyroid levels.

As with all deep - chested
breeds, Rhodesian
Ridgebacks are at higher - than - normal risk for the emergency gastrointestinal syndrome called bloat.

Ridgebacks than in many other large

However these are not as widely recognizable as the as the African -
bred Rhodesian
Ridgeback.
Though they have yet to climb to fame through literature, comics, TV shows and films like other dog
breeds have done, Rhodesian
Ridgebacks are stunning creatures, with the loyalty and skills to become outstanding in the world of canine pedigree.
Rhodesian
Ridgebacks weighing more than 85 lbs (male) or 70 lbs (female) are not typically
breed standard, but would be considered based on height and bone structure / density.

Surprisingly, the
breed with the most entries to date at 40, the Rhodesian
Ridgeback, doesn't make the top 20 list of most popular
breeds, nor do Vizlas at 29.
The Rhodesian
ridgeback can be traced back as early as the 1500s when European immigrants brought several dog
breeds to South Africa.
The American Kennel Club says this about the
breed: «A large and muscular dog, the Rhodesian
Ridgeback was not only developed as hunter but also as a family protector.
