Abstract: (ABRIDGED) In previous work, two platforms have been developed for testing computer - vision algorithms for
robotic planetary exploration (McGuire et al. 2004b, 2005; Bartolo et al. 2007).
Robotic planetary exploration began a half century ago with sobering reality checks: our nearest neighbors — the moon, Mars and Venus — were fairly horrible places for life.
Possible candidates for
robotic planetary exploration missions include Venus, Mars, asteroids, comets and Titan
By adapting ideas from
robotic planetary exploration, the human space program could get astronauts to asteroids and Mars cheaply and quickly
