Rocketship petitioned the downtown San Jose Franklin - McKinley school district for yet another charter school.

the Rocketship petition.

the Rocketship petition to the board.

The Rocketship petition also failed to mention the district's substantial Asian population and identify outreach means designed to reach or serve this demographic.

We ran additional analysis, using the definition provided in the charter
petition to Morgan Hill Unified, and found that at best,
Rocketship is in the top 12 %, as compared to all schools in California (including continuation schools, a comparison that strikes us as less than flattering).
Rocketship lost a lawsuit contesting the County's zoning exemption of the Tamien site, and to make matters worse, four local school districts (including Alum Rock) filed suit against
Rocketship's
petition to open 20 new schools.

Board President Rudy Rodriguez asked why none of the families on
Rocketship's waiting list were able to speak to the board during the public commentary, and only 11 were able to sign the
petition.
Staff also commented that the steady decline in pupil outcomes for the existing schools in the charter chain demonstrated that
Rocketship would be unlikely to meet the achievement goals set forth in their
petition.

Rocketship responded by requesting a new
petition from Alum Rock, a request that was denied by a vote of 3 - 2 by the Alum Rock School Board.
District staff discovered that many of those who signed the
petition were parents whose children already attended a
Rocketship school, and who stated they had no meaningful interest in enrolling their child in a new
Rocketship school.
The board voted 5 - 2 on most of
Rocketship's
petitions, with trustees Anna Song and Michael Chang dissenting.
