The chant of
the Roman Rite represents the very voice of the Faith
Detailed manuals like Dearmer's Parson's Handbook or Fortescue's Ceremonies of
the Roman Rite are guides to one essential part of the priestly work of leading men in their response to the glory of God, and of bringing mankind within the sphere of divine grace.
J.A.Jungman was apparently so incensed by St Thomas» teaching on sacramental signification in relation to the sacrifice that he denied his authorship of the relevant section of the Summa (III, q. 83): The Mass of
the Roman Rite: Its Origins and Development, New York, 1951, vol.i, p. 114, n. 61.
The old
Roman Rite, which emerged from a long tradition, was understood as the sacramental offering by the priest, acting in the Person of Christ, which He offered on the Cross to his Father in expiation for the sins of the world.
When the traditionalists, who believe in the Gospel, can loyally recognise themselves in the elder son ofthe parable, they will humbly rejoin the prodigals in sharing the Sacrifice of Mercy in the renewed
Roman Rite.
Just as an FYI for other posters: The Catholic Church is comprised of 23 sui juris churches, of which the Latin /
Roman rite is but one.

By issuing Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict has confirmed that Latin Rite Catholicism currently has two liturgical forms for offering the Holy Eucharist: the Novus Ordo as the ordinary form and the Usus Antiquior, the older
Roman Rite, as the extraordinary form of celebration.

One final note from GIRM 397: «
The Roman Rite constitutes a notable and precious part of the liturgical treasure and patrimony of the Catholic Church; its riches are conducive to the good of the universal Church, so that their loss would gravely harm her.»
Binding the prayers ofthe liturgy more closely to the words of the original Latin of
the Roman Rite brought a much - needed objectivity to the Church's liturgical life.
To reiterate what has been said before, the one reality and event expressed by each «usage» of the one
Roman Rite is much more beautiful and profound than any words can express.
The old
Roman rite was often done badly and hastily in many places.
Since not only the Catechism but even
the Roman Rite itself, in the Liturgy of the Hours, uses Tertullian (Thursday of the third week of Lent; the feast of Ss Philip and James), this would clearly be an impossible position.

«Following a request for information, the Catholic Bishops» Conference of England and Wales submitted a dubium (a query) to the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, which confirmed that in
the Roman Rite, whichever Form of the liturgy is being celebrated, the Holydays of Obligation are held in common.
It is not one option among many, but the actual musical medium of
the Roman Rite.
Also, the Mass always means the same, is the same reality, in any rite so how can each version of
the Roman Rite have different meanings, as Fr Philippe suggests?
None of this is intrinsic to the Missa Normativa, but accretions and excesses have so often become identified with it in practice that it has fuelled the false perception, on both sides of the progressive / traditional divide, that the ancient (Extraordinary) and modern (Ordinary) forms of
the Roman Rite embody two opposing ecclesiologies.
There is also, in light of the Holy Father's Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, a very helpful explanation of the ritual and history of the Extraordinary Form of
the Roman Rite, something that should prove useful in the parishes where this form of the Mass has now been reintroduced.

The new
Roman Catholic «
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults» has also attracted attention as a means of making the conversion of an adult an experience shared in community rather than an individual matter.
Bernard Cooke, the
Roman Catholic theologian, is said to have remarked that he could use the new United Methodist eucharistic
rite «without qualms.»
My understanding comes from the
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) classes that adult converts to the
Roman Catholic Church must attend for 9 months to a year before becoming a member.
The recent sacramental
rites published by Episcopalians,
Roman Catholics, Lutherans, the United Church of Christ, Presbyterians and United Methodists have a much richer and deeper theology of God acting in and through the sacraments to give himself to us.
Integral to it are both an emphasis on the real presence of the risen Lord, reflecting the concern of the Lutheran and
Roman Catholic traditions, and on widening the
rite beyond the elements themselves to encompass the entire celebration and the Spirit's crucial role in it, in keeping with the Orthodox and Reformed positions.
Some of the reasons mentioned are: competitive missionary activities in several parts of the world; the re-emergence of tensions between the Orthodox and
Roman Catholic Church concerning the Eastern
Rite Catholic churches; the use of humanitarian help to influence people to change their denomination; the growth of religious fundamentalism and the impact of sects and religious movements.
The Latin
Rite Roman Catholic liturgy as it is offered in most American parishes at the end of the twentieth century is so stunningly, astonishingly trivialized that it is indeed, taken on the surface, a stultifying, uninspiring, and even faith - sapping experience.
In
Roman Catholic circles, of course, the Eucharist or Mass has always been the chief service, but unfortunately (until Vatican II required a sermon or homily at every major celebration of the sacrament) the preaching of the gospel has not always or often been associated with the
rite.
