The Scottish artist Caroline McNairn, who has died from cervical cancer aged 55, created a bold figurative style that drew on a variety of sources, from French modernism to
Russian icon painting.
The exhibition demonstrates how
Russian icon painting and folk art influenced the artist's visual language, and highlights the variety of his oeuvre through the presentation of a vast number of oil paintings, gouaches, drawings, and sculptures.
His work is not sensuous nor does he offer expressive paintwork, and his work disassociates itself from almost all other painting in the history of art: except Mondrian, Suprematism and
Russian icon painting.
