I've considered using
pennames, but I wasn't sure how it worked.
One house published my nonfiction work and the other pure fiction written under
my penname, John Franklin.
Then about 3 years ago, both groups contacted me via one of my popular
pennames (not knowing it was me behind them both) inviting me to join.
One
penname was good enough because it was seen as «popular» while the real author behind that same
penname was not good enough, simply because my real name was «unknown».
One of my side projects is creating the templates for some specialized EPUB & MOBIs, like a starscape background for a sci - fi
penname.
ETA: If RWA maintained a completely hands - off approach, authors might not have control over
their pennames.

my penname was a «brand new author» in 2014 and was / is successful.
My SKQ
penname writes across several genres — YA SF, steampunk romance, future noir, middle grade.
So bear in mind — if you're actively writing under two
pennames, you'll need to write at twice the speed.
And if the Rom Com also - boughts are all YA, and sales aren't what you'd like, you can always re-launch under
a penname and start fresh... especially if you buy a bunch of ads for the relaunch.
CAUTION: People are often tempted to lure readers from one
penname to another — if you're separating them out because they're in different genres, don't undo that by mashing them back together.
Most people think of managing social media for two
pennames as being the main disadvantage, but social media doesn't sell books — my Penname hardly is on social media at all, and then only to announce a new release or sale, and trust me, she sells lots.
One thing that having a commercially - focused
penname as well as an art - focused
penname has taught me is that it's really, really okay not to sell books.
