point of clarification, I have oversight for about 15 different Amex cards for a number of people including, personal (including
SPG, Hilton, Plat, old blue
cash, ED
and EDP)

SPG, Plat, Blue Business Prederred) The Amex offers on the PRG have been different, numerous
and stackable.
Marriott does have the concept of a
Cash and Points room as well, but most people I know prefer the
SPG program better, especially at lower categories

We've certainly seen a lot of devaluation lately with nearly 100 % increases to the Hilton HHonors award chart, some adjustments to
Cash +
Points awards from
SPG,
and the hit to airline mile transfers from Club Carlson.
SPG has a convoluted reward chart, so I'll break it down into 3 sections: Reward Nights during Low Season
and Weekdays, Reward Nights during High Season
and Weekends (note only Categories 1
and 2 decrease for weekends),
and Cash &
Points.
I opted to pay
cash, instead of transferring Starwood Preferred Guest
points to Delta (Delta is a
SPG airline partner), as the DCA to JFK flight was ~ $ 75
and the DTW to DCA flight was ~ $ 125.
I've used
SPG points for nearly courtside seats at the US Open (which I'd never have paid
cash for)
and was more than happy to do so.
I like the idea of using the
SPG AmEx because I think 1 Starpoint is roughly equal to 1.5 United miles,
and they're especially useful for
Cash +
Points awards.
When you add in the 500
point SPG quarterly promotion
and double
points on my
SPG Amex, paying
cash and picking up 1,150 Starpoints effectively made it a wash.

points award that cost me 5K starpoints + US$ 75 at Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel in a couple of weeks — a really great «value».

Now, Icelandair's winter
and spring fares are not that expensive, so this may not be the best use of those 40k
SPG points, but who am I to tell you that you should lay out
cash instead of using those
