It's interesting that
SPG lifetime elites are being told that their Starpoint
balances will no longer expire as it
points to the fact that lifetime status will be eventually incorporated into the new combined Marriott rewards /
SPG loyalty program (why introduce a benefit that you're going to wipe out within the next 2 years?)
SPG lifetime Platinum elites will probably be pleased that their
points balances will not longer ever expire but, considering how easy it is to keep
SPG balances live, this isn't exactly a big deal.....
Now that
points can be moved freely between the loyalty systems its is possible to, essentially, transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards
points to
SPG (transfer to Marriott at a 1:1 ratio and then to
SPG at a 3:1 ratio)-- not a great use of Chase UR
points in my opinion but it could be useful to anyone with a larger UR
balance than they know what to do with.
I had gotten a targeted 0 % interest offer for 6 months so this seemed like a great opportunity to get
SPG points and not need to pay off the
balance until I file my taxes and get my refund.
To save up for this trip (and other trips), we use a strategic credit card plan that involved opening the following cards to help build up our
balances of mostly
SPG and Chase Ultimate Rewards
points.
If you're low on Chase UR
points, Amex MR
points, or
SPG points, you could transfer Citi ThankYou
points to these airline loyalty programs to add to your overall mileage
balance.
Also keep in mind that since Marriott and
SPG merged, you can transfer
points balances between the two as you deem necessary.
