The main reward for accruing Starpoints ® is to receive free nights at one of the mentioned hotels through redemption of a certain sum of
points; however, Starpoints ® can be
redeemed for
SPG ® flights with over 150 airlines.
But if you don't want to transfer
points to miles, you can also
redeem your
points for flights on over 150 airlines using
SPG Flights, with no blackout dates.
Since Marriott and
SPG are merging, you can use your Marriott
points directly at Marriott hotels or transfer your Marriott
points at a 3:1 ratio to
SPG and
redeem for Starwood hotels.
Don't forget that
SPG and Marriott are merging, so you have the added benefit of converting
SPG points to Marriott Rewards (or vice versa) to
redeem SPG points toward Marriott hotels.
If using
points transferred from
SPG, you'd be
redeeming at a value of over 3 cents a
point.
If you
redeem points on hotel stays at
SPG ®, you get one of the most attractive redemption rates among hotel credit cards — around 2 cents per 1 reward
point.
Most of the redemption options available with this card are quite regular (gift cards, merchandise, etc.), but the most profitable one is to
redeem points on hotel stays within the
SPG ® hotel chain.
Points earned can be
redeemed with 6,500 extraordinary hotels across 29 brands — including
SPG hotels, Marriotts and Ritz Carltons.
While
SPG point transfers are the best option if you have loads of
SPG points, since you receive a 5000 mile bonus when transferring increments of 20,000
SPG points, you can transfer other hotel
points to AA miles, which may be worthwhile if you have a ton of these
points or just need to slightly top up your AAdvantage account to
redeem for an award.
Card only earns 1x on all purchases, but some people highly value these
points (either for
redeeming on
SPG properties or for the ability to transfer to many airline partners at a rate of 1:1 and get a 5,000
point bonus for every 20,000
points transferred).
Meanwhile, the Starwood card allows you to
redeem your
points toward hotel stays with
SPG or Marriott, or you can transfer to a whopping 34 different of airlines.
Typically,
SPG points can be
redeemed for a 25 % bonus if you transfer 20,000
points to an airline partner.
SPG points can be used at
SPG hotels, but they
points can also be transferred to nearly any airline program and
redeemed for flights.

Tip # 2: You can
redeem your
SPG Starpoints for hotel nights at a pretty good value of over $ 0.02 per
point for most stays.
With the same amount of
SPG points (30,000 - 35,000 / night) needed to stay at each hotel, Mr. C and I chose to
redeem our
points on one of the most expensive hotels in New York, The St. Regis New York.
No matter how you decide to
redeem your
SPG points, there's no question that the bigger your
points balance, the more flexibility you will have.

Once you have converted your
SPG points to miles, they must be
redeemed within that program, which means you need to know the redemption rules and prices for every program that you intend to transfer miles to.
When it comes to
redeeming points for free nights, Marriott has nine categories of hotels (which cost between 7,500 and 45,000
points per night) whereas
SPG has seven, requiring 2,000 to 35,000
points per night.
Redeem points toward free nights at over 1,300 hotels and resorts in over 100 countries and free flights on over 150 airlines with
SPG Flights.
The new Marriott's combined 30 brands now give me even more options to earn and
redeem my
SPG points.
With Singapore Airlines, even if I never fly again, I know that I can transfer
points from Amex,
SPG, Chase and Citi to top off my account and
redeem them for an award.
But remember that Amex does provide an equally simple way to
redeem Star Alliance flights, including the three airlines mentioned above by earning Membership Rewards or
SPG points and transferring them to Air Canada's Aeroplan.
But you may want to start looking for ways to
redeem those
SPG points already acquired if you were saving up for a big trip.
Furthermore, some cards like the
SPG and Marriott cards offer unique ways to
redeem points, such that the value in cents per
point easily dwarfs other cards.

With the bonus given to me from
SPG of 15k miles along with the 50 % bonus for
redeeming my hotel

points for a 5 night stay at Cat 3 hotel and 50,000 miles to the frequent flyer program of your choice within
SPG partners
This is a big loss if you were planning to
redeem Marriott or
SPG points for this in 2017.
With American Airlines, you would
redeem 270,000 Marriott Rewards
points or 90,000
SPG Starpoints to receive 7 nights in a Category 1 - 5 Marriott hotel and 144,000 American AAdvantage miles (120,000 miles + 24,000 bonus miles).

While I've used
SPG points to
redeem for hotels, like the Westin in Cape Town, I put more value in
SPG points for their transferability to so many different airline partners.

point is just to show that using
SPG points to LATAM can be a cheaper way to
redeem with the 50 % bonus transfer ratio than Avios.)
