experience SRLs soon begin to realize the difference between what they should expect and what they can anticipate.
To fully understand the significance of the
SRL phenomenon — its
experience and its effect on law — it seems to me one must begin with questions as fundamental as «what is a lawyer?»
As a rather
experienced SRL (who never «chose» to be self - represented) I have no trouble agreeing about what we should «expect».
But as we rediscover each time we release a new resource, and
experience the gratitude of
SRLs and the widespread attention of other national and provincial organizations, the enormous amount of work necessary to develop these resources is being undertaken by some of the most overworked and under - resourced agencies and individuals in the access to justice field.
My perspective is that of an
experienced SRL who prevailed in the first of a series of court actions and who more recently, having acted for another person in bringing a complaint to the Law Society, challenged the result by filing a judicial review petition in her name.
Even more slowly, the A2J Sector is considering including members of the public, and perhaps those who have had
experiences as
SRLs, in their deliberations and think tanks.

SRL in proceedings ranging from a union grievance arbitration hearing to the B.C. Court of Appeal and more than one engagement with the Canadian Judicial Council.
If the legal establishment was willing to listen to some of the

SRLs are as eager to share the story of their

Most
SRLs do not have a positive
experience and are frequently overwhelmed, stressed and feel unfairly treated by a justice system that is less welcoming than they had expected and hoped.
Social agencies are seeing increasing numbers of people who are representing themselves require both enhanced resources and research to identify how to support
SRLs, who consistently describe stress - related illnesses and other negative social consequences of their
experience.
The
SRLs also shared personal stories and
experiences navigating through our justice system with faculty and students during a lunchtime panel discussion.
Perhaps my
experience as an
SRL has been unique, but I believe it demonstrates the value of asking questions.
