At this year's Conference we shared the

First, I must applaud those organizations working hard to correct the lacunae of plain language

SRLs to access and understand the law.
But as we rediscover each time we release a new
resource, and experience the gratitude of
SRLs and the widespread attention of other national and provincial organizations, the enormous amount of work necessary to develop these
resources is being undertaken by some of the most overworked and under -
resourced agencies and individuals in the access to justice field.
There are links to information on other websites, but the platform generally tries to provide a complete
resource so that people do not get lost navigating from site to site (a problem many
SRLs described in the National Study: Julie).
Why are the small steps being taken falling to marginally
resourced projects and worker bees, volunteers, and
SRL «testers» for whom we sometimes can not even raise the bus fare to participate in a tester focus group?
The Windsor Public Library (WPL) and the Essex County Public Library (ECPL) have both committed to partner with NSRLP to develop
resources and programming to help family
SRLs using their local public libraries.
Growing numbers of
SRLs in civil and family courts raise challenges for the efficient use of available justice system
resources which must be balanced with a commitment to access to justice, as described by the Supreme Court of Canada in Hryniak v Mauldin [3].
After noticing a sharp upswing in the number of lawyers offering unbundled legal services, as well as other professionals including para-legals, coaches and even editors offering services to
SRLs, NSRLP is creating a Canada - wide database that will serve two purposes — an information
resource for
SRLs looking for affordable assistance, and a means of connecting the many different professionals interested in working with
SRLs.
One of NSRLP's mandates is to develop practical and accessible
resources to empower
SRLs and better equip them on multiple fronts.
NSRLP recently reviewed 2 new — and quite different — on - line Canadian
resources designed to assist and support family
SRLs.
In» Representing Yourself in Court: How to Win Your Case on Your Own», Devlin Farmer uses his experience as a lawyer to create a
resource - rich tool that offers
SRLs insight into complex court processes and the «tricks of the trade» used by lawyers.
The evolving case law on judicial assistance to
SRLs and other related issues is now being tracked by the NSRLP, and upon completion will be published as a new
resource.
In addition to helping
SRLs access legal information and locate referrals to affordable legal services, this system of portals hopes to connect the public to more information about their legal rights, court information, social services in their area, and other
resources.
Discussion between the judge and the Clicklaw staff produced a proposed solution: Clicklaw would provide judges, judicial case managers, court registries and other organizations with one - page handouts which would guide
SRLs to
resources likely to be helpful to them.
They publish
resources designed specifically for
SRLs, as well as research reports that examine the implications for the justice system.
The large and continuing rise in the number of
SRLs requires a rigorous re-evaluation of the types of assistance that are presently publicly funded, and the examination of alternative and additional models including legal information services, paralegals, educational and therapeutic
resources and logistical assistance, which can offer maximum value to
SRLs.
Social agencies are seeing increasing numbers of people who are representing themselves require both enhanced
resources and research to identify how to support
SRLs, who consistently describe stress - related illnesses and other negative social consequences of their experience.
However
SRLs are highly resourceful in continuing to look for assistance wherever they can find it — whether pro bono services, duty counsel assistance, or relying on their own research using the World Wide Web (the most popular
resource continues to be Can Lll, although some other sites come in for positive feedback also).

SRLs and the larger public understand that the law library is a
resource available to them.
Through partnerships with other public service providers such as public libraries, Legal Guidance or other pro bono agencies, the law library will benefit through increased exposure, and
SRLs will ultimately benefit by learning how to access a significant
