One opportunity is to combine the isolated study of science,
maths and technology (
like woodwork — though all the cool kids are now running «maker spaces» instead) into a single, integrated «
STEM»
subject.
While the decline might not seem
like much to lose hope over, the way we approach
STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Maths) is certainly in need of a revamp.
Like all state schools, they have to teach a broad and balanced curriculum with a focus on English,
Maths and Science; they are however free to vary their curricula in order to specialise in certain
subjects such as
STEM, to provide a bilingual education or to use teaching methods from other countries.
This type of challenge (and the student - centered learning it requires) epitomizes the best of the vision for
STEM, not only showing the clear connections between
subjects like engineering and
math, but showing how much more powerful and authentic these
subjects become when used in tandem.
