If you've still got an Aeroplan /
SWISS First award ticket (s) hanging around in an ambiguous state it might be worth holding on to it until you can change it to a Lufthansa First or Business Class ticket.

awards are not bookable using KrisFlyer Miles and neither are premium economy seats on Star Alliance partner airlines.
They told me they would not / could not honor the
SWISS First booking, but they could reaccommodate me on another carrier or in another class of service if we could find partner level
award space available.

award availability disappeared pretty quickly and, a few days later, those who had actually booked the
awards suddenly noticed that their reservations were being cancelled.
Had I gone ahead and booked the
SWISS First Class
award I would have ended up with 110,000 miles stuck in an Aeroplan account that may or may not have been any use when it comes to booking flights for the 2019 trip.
Under normal conditions
SWISS First Class
awards are only bookable by elite members of the Miles & More program but, for reasons I'm not entirely clear about, these
awards briefly became available to all and sundry a couple of weeks ago.
I really, really wanted to book the
SWISS First Class
award (or at least try to) and I came very close to doing just that a couple of times... but I think common sense prevailed and I got lucky because of that.
Recently, the blogosphere exploded with the news that
SWISS appeared to release
First Class
award space to Star Alliance partners.

This was noteworthy because
SWISS generally only allows those with elite status in their loyalty program to book
awards in
First.
Booking directly with Miles & More
award miles is the easiest way to get in Lufthansa's coveted
first class cabin, for which seats only open for partner airlines» frequent flyer bookings two weeks before departure, and
SWISS first class, which is only open to Miles & More members.
While many frequent flyers use Lufthansa miles to get into their (and
Swiss)
first class cabins without waiting until the last minute, as Lufthansa doesn't release
first class
awards to partners until very close to departure,
first class redemptions with Miles & More can in many cases be the worst value
awards because of fees.
And while I don't mind planning last minute, for 99 % of people booking a Lufthansa or
Swiss first class
award within a week of departure just isn't practical.
It's worth noting that it's tougher than ever before to find
first class Star Alliance award space on Lufthansa and Swiss (see How to Deal with No More Lufthansa Advance First Class Availability), so nowadays this is most practical when planning close to departure, as Lufthansa tends to open up award space no more than three weeks

You'll notice that I have specifically excluded Lufthansa
First Class, which is available at most 15 days in advance, and
Swiss First Class, which has pretty much disappeared for
award bookings, even for solo tickets.
Unfortunately those days are over, and it's now quite literally impossible to get
Swiss first or business class
award space on any route from North America to Europe except their Montreal route.
