School Choice And Education Reform A Big Winner This Session April 26, 2016 by Brett Kittredge After an intense four months, the 2016 legislative session came to an
end last
week.
The event, titled «Stronger Together, A Celebration of
School Choice» marks the
end of National
School Choice Week, a public campaign to make K - 12 students and their parents aware of options in education.
The state's governor, Bobby Jindal, is looking to further burnish the state's efforts on the teacher quality front this
week with his proposal to eliminate near - lifetime employment for laggard teachers with unsatisfactory ratings on the state's new teacher evaluation system, while pushing further on expanding charters by allowing successful charter operators to expand without having to go through the current approval process, and allowing the state education department to authorize charters throughout the state (and thus,
ending efforts by traditional districts to restrict
school choice within their boundaries).
Last
week, American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten wrote a piece in Huffington Post that typifies the union mentality, trashing
school choice, before donning the good - witch mask to
end with «We are at a pivotal moment — a moment when we must reclaim the promise of public education without further detours, distractions and delays.»
