I spent my summer reviewing
district policies,
school procedures,
student and parent
handbooks, and any data we had available on the
school.
This comprehensive parent /
student handbook covers a wide variety of policies of Kent
School District's one - to - one initiative.
Specific suggestions included creating a supportive
school climate committee, making
student handbooks more accessible to
students and parents, and having the
district regularly publish data on
school discipline.
This
handbook can be used at every level of educational organizations, from a grade - level team to a full
school or
district system working to ensure all
students are achieving at high levels.
In light of the timing of this new law, which comes just after the start of the
school year when
student handbooks likely have already been distributed to
students, we advise that
school districts and
schools move forward with amendments to their discipline policies to provide the required notice at this time.
The Parent &
Student handbook covers
district policies parents / guardians and
students need to follow for Springfield Public
Schools.
We continue to recommend that the notice language be contained in both
student handbooks and the
district's and / or
school's formal discipline policy.
The
student policy in Flaherty v. Keystone Oaks
School District was also found to be vague and overbroad, because the
student handbook used for the discipline lacked geographic limitation, was not linked to substantial disruption, and the terminology used was too vague to allow
students to know what behaviour would violate them.
