family engagement in the home is vital and can even transform
school districts.
«We need a more equitable approach to
family engagement,» Weiss continues, «one that takes into account
family strengths and a shared responsibility assumed by
families,
schools, and communities for children's development across time and in different settings.»
«Today we're sharing our Model Framework that
schools can use to help them develop partnerships and increase
family engagement,» Duncan said.
By not linking
school events like open houses to real learning opportunities, Mapp says, we're missing a key opportunity to build lasting
family engagement.
«When we change from a
school sense to a more parent sense type of
engagement strategy, it means really thinking about how to support
families in what they are already doing at home.
Once the results are in from online and hard copy offerings, parents and teachers from our
family engagement team will sit down this summer to identify strengths and weaknesses prior to drafting our 2013 - 14
school year
family engagement goals.
So if we know all of this, Mapp asks, why are
schools still struggling to increase
family engagement?
Family engagement is a shared responsibility of
families,
schools, afterschool programs, and communities.
