Says Pittsburgh basketball coach Paul Evans, «Not only will it lead to more
cheating on the SAT and ACT scores, but you'll have
cheating by boosters who will pay for the [nonqualifiers»] first year of
school.»
Now,
schools cheat by paying middlemen to ferry prospects
on unofficial visits they couldn't otherwise afford.
The team collected and reported information
on 38 incidents of general
cheating, along with 50 incidences of plagiarism during the course of one
school year, out of a total student body of approximately 1,600 students.
Unfortunately, she is typical of a breed of teenagers who have become so focused — by their parents, their
schools, the culture, their peers and themselves

Cheated,» a recently released Challenge Success white paper, discusses the evidence that dispels these misunderstandings based
on its review of fifteen landmark studies
on cheating in addition to their own research with
schools and students.
They describe the culture at these high - achieving
schools as «cut - throat competitive» and promoting a «succeed at all costs» mentality that leads to
cheating on tests and assignments.

A statistical technique that identifies cases of potential
cheating within Chicago's public
schools (described in detail below) indicates that,
on any given exam, only 3 to 6 percent of classrooms experience instances of teachers or administrators» doctoring students» exams.
These scandals have aroused public concern, but there has been little hard evidence
on the extent of
cheating by
school personnel
on the type of tests required by recently enacted accountability legislation.
A former Costano teacher told the paper that a
school administrator had encouraged him to
cheat on the exams, and a subsequent examination of the students» actual answer sheets revealed an unusually high number of erasure marks where answers had been changed from wrong to right.
Using data
on test scores and student records from the Chicago Public
Schools, we developed a statistical algorithm to identify classrooms where
cheating was suspected.
