Although fully familiar with the enormous power
of modern
science, medicine and technology, he held high Christian love as the answer to
human needs in the broadest sense: «If you have Christian love,» he declared to a stunned audience, «you have motive for existence, a guide for
action, a reason for courage, an imperative necessity for intellectual honesty.»
Accordingly, the social
sciences may be expected to play an increasingly important role in liberal learning, as it becomes ever more evident that the conditions
of human existence are not simply imposed by fate, nor the results
of the interplay
of blind, impersonal forces, but the consequences
of deliberale
human action.
The Faith perspective sets
human action within the context
of an ecosystem, material (as used in the normal sense
of the word by
science) and spiritual (ignored or denied by western society).
«Recognizing that
human actions contribute to climate change is an important step toward addressing how to tackle it,» said Rush Holt, AAAS CEO and executive publisher,
Science family
of journals.
«The Lancet report underscores the terrible consequences for
human health if we don't start reducing the dangerous carbon pollution fueling climate change — and dramatic benefits for people the world over from taking
action now,» echoed Kim Knowlton, senior scientist and deputy director
of the
Science Center at the Natural Resources Defense Council, in a release.

Summarizing the key message
of the review study, Prof. Bejder stated, «The recovery
of the iconic humpback whales
of Australia delivers both hope and optimism, as well as an opportunity to celebrate success at two levels: (1) the successful implementation
of contentious international management
actions to protect marine species; and (2) the wise and significant investment in conservation
science, illustrating how society can respond to strong conservation interventions to achieve outcomes that are not simply for immediate,
human material gains.

Planet Under Pressure, a four - day conference exploring how
science can identify and limit risks in the face
of increasing
human impacts on the Earth, has ended * with a call for «urgent
action» against the the unrelenting buildup
of greenhouse gases.
Rather than focussing on the important but inherently incremental developments in the
science behind the issue, the media would do us all a favor by maintaining a consistent message regarding the underlying issue (i.e.
human action is causing climate change, and climate change has the potential to do great harm to our way
of life) and focus on how ordinary people can take steps in their own lives to help address the problem in ways that don't require inordinate sacrifice.
The PBS Frontline documentary, written and directed by Martin Smith, explores the world to explain why there has been such a persistent gap between the growing body
of science pointing to an increasingly
human - warmed world and
action by policymakers, politicians and the public to limit risks.
Climate
science says, «this is a range given our inability to completely predict massive
human and insitutional
actions and the availability and development
of technology, so here are some scenarios — if the conditions are X0, we see X1 as a likely outcome.
I agree with her that there is plenty to debate, both on the
science in tough areas like attribution and climate sensitivity and on what mix
of incentives, investments, policies, communication efforts and other
actions can build a more durable
human relationship with the climate system.
These revisions are one example
of a strategy we saw Carson use consistently: Add uncertainty at the level
of ignorance to destabilize the
science, then articulate the harms, hazards, or consequences behind our current
actions, and drive it home with a visceral image
of risk (which she does in this example through images
of liver damage, the accumulation
of DDT in milk and butter, and the ability
of toxic chemicals to pass to breast - fed
human infants, and to a fetus in utero).
Pope Francis Calls for

We're not offering a «counter-claim» about the
science, because our position is that even the concrete, incontrovertible, unassailable fact
of human influence on global warming and climate change does not, by itself, make a case for
action.
Your concern for genuine
science and for the poor requires a more cautious approach, one that carefully considers the scientific evidence regarding the real, not merely the theoretical, effects
of human action on global climate, and carefully considers energy technology and economics in seeking to protect the poor from harm.

And it was recognized those
actions were a crap shoot (Where good
science and policy goes bad: de-salinization plants in Oz rather than managing episodic flooding, drilling 20,000 ′ below a seafloor 5,000 ′ under a precious biosphere to seek oil that is abundantl available on dry land, for examples), but can anyone name a project
of doubt on the scale
of this one where unspeakable trillions are to be spent, redistributed, productivity disincentized, where people's lives across the world will be thrown into uncertainty, where this trans - generational mindset will, by design, crush the willful and spirited energy and creativity
of human kind until it is finally overthrown democratically or otherwise?
It is no wonder 97 percent
of climate scientists and all
of the national academies
of science in the world agree climate change is real, it is happening now, it's caused by
humans, and is cause for immediate
action before it is too late.»
«Ignorance
of science is one blockade to effective
action on the
human predicament.
In a sharp change from its cautious approach in the past, the National Academy
of Sciences on Wednesday called for taxes on carbon emissions, a cap - and - trade program for such emissions or some other strong
action to curb runaway global warming.Such
actions, which would increase the cost
of using coal and petroleum — at least in the immediate future — are necessary because «climate change is occurring, the Earth is warming... concentrations
of carbon dioxide are increasing, and there are very clear fingerprints that link [those effects] to
humans,» said Pamela A. Matson
of Stanford University, who chaired one
of five panels organized by the academy at the request
of Congress to look at the
science of climate change and how the nation should respond.
While environmental activists and some politicians claim «the debate is over» and call for immediate
action to reduce man - made greenhouse gas emissions, others say the
science points to only a very small
human impact — too small to warrant concern — and the costs
of trying to prevent global warming far exceed the benefits.
Mr Abbott, who once described the «so - called settled
science»
of climate change as «crap», now accepts that
human actions contribute to global warming.
Science believes in randomness as the basis
of existence, and so with
humans doing non-random things, and having a meaning and purpose we perceive to our lives, and taking
actions that we understand will lead to desired outcomes, then they have rebelled against humanity for the sake
of their randomist meaninglessness ideology.
That they choose not to link those events, when appropriate, to
human actions is a disservice to their
science and to those who depend on them — and in fact, it may partially explain the public's lack
of acceptance
of climate
science.
While trade - offs are inevitable,
science can help identify compatible water management
actions that not only buffer against the worst effects
of climate change, but meet ecosystem needs while satisfying
human demands, says Joshua Viers
Most books about climate change focus on some aspect
of the
science of the issue; some deal with issues
of mitigation — that is, reducing emissions
of greenhouse gases — or adaptation — that is,
actions to adjust
human behavior or infrastructure to the consequences
of the warming that Earth will experience over the coming decades.
«
Human actions not only are emitting greenhouse gases based on our own activities, but also are causing plants and animals and microbes to be net emitters
of greenhouse gases as well,» said Anna Michalak, a co-author
of the study with the Carnegie Institution for
Science in Stanford, Calif..
Ms. Black also served for five years as a contracted personnel for Orange County Sheriff Office, the Federal Department
