First, we see in
Scripture particular people and communities that represent times and places very different from our own.

But very often this constant awareness of spiritual climates enables us to also recognising the Lord's heart for a
particular /
person / situation and partner with Him in what He chooses to do through us, perhaps through prayer, releasing of
scripture, laying hands, etc., in order to release His purpose and power.
A church leader would have a good following of
people in a
particular town or city, and some other teacher would arrive in town, and begin to teach
Scripture in a different way or with a different emphasis.
We can see only hints of divine beauty, and if some poets or artists seem to have a talent for seeing a
particular kind of natural beauty it does not follow that they will also see or appreciate supernatural beauty (for example, in
people, liturgy, or
scripture).
Anyone with their wits about them who reads
scripture and prays and is genuinely humble will see that many of the issues which push
people into «camps» - especially but not only in the U.S. - are distortions in both directions caused by trying to get a quick fix on a doctrinal or ethical issue, squashing it into the small categories of one
particular culture.
When there is a such a wide array of opinions and beliefs on what a
particular passage means, and there is very little chance for the average student of
Scripture to gain clarity or certainty on which view is right, most
people think «Why even try?»
On the other hand, if prayer and
scripture reading are familiar and natural, and they seem to have value for the
particular person, they should be used.
While the ears of some
people do itch for funny stories, jokes, and encouraging insights based on psychology and current events, the ears of other
people itch to hear the latest insight on a difficult Bible passage, or the newest scholarly explanation of a
particular word in
Scripture.
Why is it that some
people dislike
people like me having a concrete,
particular opinion about
scripture and voicing that opinion?
They attend to
scripture; struggle to discern the gospel's call and demand on them and their congregations in
particular contexts; lead worship, preach and teach; respond to requests for help of all kinds from myriad
people in need; live with children, youth and adults through life cycles marked by both great joy and profound sadness; and take responsibility for the unending work of running an organization with buildings, budgets, and public relations and personnel issues.
The term is used in the Bible of Christ, and it is used of the gospel as preached by the early church before a canon of
scripture existed, and it's used of prophecies received at a
particular time for
particular people to a
particular prophet.
