The
Scriptures are sacred because they
present the thoughts and acts of men who were searching for God, and who in these writings left on record their highest concepts of righteousness,
truth, and holiness.
The
truth of the text is found in the lives of it's believers, past and
present, what manner of folk their
scriptures have transformed them into.
Although there are many good study Bibles out there, when we began working on the first edition of the Reformation Study Bible, there were no study Bibles that consciously and consistently
presented the great
truths of
scripture that were recovered during the Protestant Reformation.
The Second Vatican Council's Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei verbum, reminds Catholics of the need to attend to the literary genres of
scripture, since
truth is
presented and expressed differently in historical, prophetic or poetic texts, or in other styles of speech.
These pastors who preach this stuff are not
presenting the gospell and alot of people are being turned the wrong way and the
truth is the
scripture says that people who make people stumble should have a stone tied around their neck and cast into the water.
However, I did point out that we do have examples of people in
Scripture who believed in Jesus and received everlasting life, but did not know about the death and resurrection of Jesus, and even when
presented with these
truths, did not believe them (cf. Matt 16:31 - 32; Mark 9:31 - 32; Luke 9:44 - 45; 18:31 - 34; 24:19 - 26; John 20:9, 24 - 30).
This is the
truth presented in
Scripture, and this is the view of God which will help people work through their depression and anxiety about life without giving in to suicide.
