You can't make new
tilesets / models / enemies / music / maps or anything in Mario Maker, and the ranking system is cluttered with crappy automatic levels and terrible levels that only get stars because they were created by a popular YouTuber.
There's a ton of new
tilesets.
If nothing else, games can be much bigger than 4MBs allowing for much more variety of visuals (Chrono Trigger looks great but several dungeons use palette swaps of earlier dungeon
tilesets due to space limitations).
