Farmers are often willing to experiment with new crops, but would benefit from
information about local market prices and
seasonal climate forecasts, as well as help with inputs — which could be provided by research organisations and development groups working in the field, Thornton told AlertNet from Nairobi.
Ms Najira said that the Government of Malawi is using
climate information to derive resilient designs and to address the impacts of
climate change and variability, to plan for disaster risk management and for contingency planning (
seasonal forecasts).
At the end of the talk, the presenter listed the main barriers faced by users in the application of
seasonal predictions, which have a lot to do with the lack of communication and the difficulties to match the user expectations in terms of
climate information.

The
climate information provided for this purpose is derived from observations, global and regional reanalyses,
seasonal forecast data,
climate model simulations, and other data needed to estimate or project sectoral impacts.
Observations of recent global warming, short - term cooling after major volcanic eruptions, cooling at the Last Glacial Maximum and other periods in the historical record, and the
seasonal variation in
climate, all provide some
information which helps to determine the value of
climate sensitivity.
WMO coordinates efforts for meeting the needs for
climate information, such as for
climate monitoring,
climate - data management,
climate - change detection,
seasonal - to - interannual
climate predictions, and assessments of the impacts of
climate change.
They used several simple indices, including the land - ocean contrast, the meridional gradient, and the magnitude of the
seasonal cycle, to describe global
climate variations and showed that for natural variations, they contain
information independent of the global mean temperature.
