search tool doesn't pull up any
seats.
Although ITA doesn't
search award fares directly, you can use the system to gauge award
availability pretty reliably based on the
seat codes the system shows.
Finding
seats can be extremely difficult of course, but we do the legwork for you on a

availability.
A quick
search for
availability about 7 + months out showed many open business class and first class
seats between Hong Kong and Sydney and so you'd just need to find Cathay Pacific flights from departure points in the US (SFO or LAX).
I
searched for months on Alaska's website and only found a couple of days with open business class
seating but others have had more luck finding business class
availability (via Fiji).

seats open) between Hong Kong and Auckland and so you'd just need to find Cathay Pacific flights from departure points in the US (SFO or LAX).
Availability from US airports can be a bit hit or miss but with enough
searching it shouldn't be too difficult to find (I found several
seats in business class from SFO to HKG just 4 to 5 months out).

The first screen hasn't changed; you can go for advanced
search if you want a business class
seat or / and flexible days

There are services such as ExpertFlyer that can

availability and send you an alert when
seats open up.
Also since you're Executive Platinum you can change anything for free, so maybe
search for one
seat at a time and put each of you on different flights if you see
availability for just one or two people.
You can use this tool to
search for award
availability and discover those rare award airline
seats easily.
Also, every airline releases award
seats at different times, so it is a little tough to predict when the best time is to
search for
availability.
Dear Tracey, United frequent flier miles can be a valuable commodity, because it is easy to
search for award
availability on United's website and because United tends to have more award
seats available than its competitors.
Although ExpertFlyer no longer
searches Lufthansa award
availability, you can use it to see
seat availability on specific flights, and I saw there were plenty of open
seats on both FRA - LAX flights August 3, so I just bided my time.
