SegWit wallets and transactions.

Payments from
SegWit wallets have a different transaction format than non-SegWit transactions.
That's why we have put in the work to make our payment processing service fully compatible with bitcoin transactions from
SegWit wallets.
The Bitcoin Core 0.16.0 update has been officially released, introducing full support for
the SegWit wallet and user interfaces.
In addition, you can still send bitcoin from
a SegWit wallet to a legacy wallet and vice versa since the transactions are still taking place on the same blockchain.
Even after adding
a SegWit wallet address, bitcoins sent to your previous legacy bitcoin address will still work.
Note: You can send Bitcoin from a legacy wallet to
a SegWit wallet (and vice versa)-- it is still done on the same Bitcoin blockchain.

Right now not every
wallet has
SegWit features.
Of all of the
wallets currently supporting
SegWit, BitPay recommends the Electrum
Wallet for reliably paying BitPay invoices.

Wallet IMPORTANT: If you do not wish to use
SegWit, or if you are not sure about anything, just click on the LEGACY button and you'll access and manage your accounts as it was before.
Specifically, Bitcoin Core 0.16.0 provides full support for
SegWit in the
wallet and user interface.
All on - chain transactions sent by this
wallet are
segwit transactions, thus benefitting from a fee discount compared to legacy transactions.
Of course, because
segwit is fully backward compatible, our
wallet can send / receive transactions to / from all bitcoin
wallets, even non-
segwit ones.
Users can access a new
SegWit address or legacy addresses (where current funds are stored) when starting the Bitcoin
Wallet Chrome application (from v1.9.0).
SegWit paves the way to multiple Bitcoin scripting optimizations (through anti malleability and script versioning)-- the Ledger team is closely monitoring progress on those different topics to make available the Ledger Hardware
Wallet with those innovations (such as the Lightning Network) as soon as possible.

Payment processor BitPay confirmed its intention to integrate
SegWit as well for its Copay
wallet and the new BitPay
wallet, but the company is taking a slightly more conservative approach.

GreenAddress (and its reimplementation GreenBits), the Bitcoin
wallet that was acquired by blockchain infrastructure company Blockstream last year, is the first mobile
wallet to offer Segregated Witness (
SegWit) transactions.

The Ciphrex CEO talked about his own experience assisting
wallet developers with the
SegWit integration:
Some detractors of the
SegWit soft fork have noted the changes to Bitcoin
wallets required by this proposal are too cumbersome, but Lombrozo said that the
wallet developers he's worked with have been able to implement the required changes in a few days.
Earlier,
SegWit received support from other services, such as
wallets Bitwala and Trezor.
Bhardwaj referred to Segregated Witness (
SegWit), a proposed soft - forking (backward compatible) change to Bitcoin that includes an increase in the effective block size limit to more than 2 MB (after users upgrade to
SegWit - enabled
wallets), as a «small to medium level increase in the network capacity.»
Lombrozo noted that there are some changes that will have to be made in
wallets that wish to reap the benefits of
SegWit, but these changes are minor.
Although Segregated Witness (
SegWit) has near - universal support from the Bitcoin development community, there are some who say the changes required by individual
wallet providers may be a bit too much to handle.

In addition to the relative simplicity of integrating
SegWit into a
wallet, Lombrozo also commented on the benefits of this new feature for multisig transactions.
The Bitcoin
wallet comes with
SegWit addresses by default, though there is an option to use legacy addresses as well.
Plus, even without nifty new features, he said all the bitcoin
wallets updated with
SegWit will immediately be able to handle twice the number of transactions, so from between 5 to 7 transactions per second now to 10 or 12 transactions tomorrow, depending on the transaction type.
This means that when the funds received on these addresses are spent in a payment later, Bitcoin Core
wallet users utilize the added block space offered by
SegWit.
In recent months, nearly every bitcoin exchange and
wallet provider of note has at least stated their intention to implement the necessary changes to prepare for the activation of
SegWit, but many mining pool operators have yet to signal support for this change.
