the Select promo days has dropped, as more people get on board (and people's kindles are full of other freebies!)

Now I know that most book
promo sites don't allow you to submit every 18
days so what I do is have 2 spreadsheets set up and one time I
select certain sites and then the other one on the next
day.

Select are less effective than they used to be.

Just a follow up comment: My client Bear Jack Gebhardt, author of PRACTICING THE PRESENCE OF PEACE and HOW TO HELP YOUR SMOKER QUIT, added his books to the
Select Program and today and tomorrow (1/22 and 1/23) he's using 2 of his 5
promo days.

After trying several 99 cent
promos, we took advantage of the 5 free
days you get each enrollment period in KDP
Select for Book1 and Book2 of the series and ran some ads on different
promo sites (BestEbookFinder, xtme, Buchregen, and ebook-kaufen.com).
However, if you'd like to get the benefits of KDP
Select — 5 free
promo days, Countdown Deals and borrows — then the book has to be exclusive with Amazon.
We signed up for the KDP
select promo and originally planned to make our book free for 2
days.
Anyway, while I definitely consider it was worthwhile to enroll this particular book in
Select and do the free
promo (I imagine I'll use my other 2
days just before my
Select period ends), it's obvious that Amazon has indeed changed their algorithms to the detriment of books going from free to paid status.
While we're on the subject of Amazon's changes, I thought I'd report on my recent experience with KDP

In the past, this flashcard book always did well with the free
promo (over a thousand books in the good old
days when KDP
Select was new, and hundreds in later months), so I have something to compare it with.

promo days but free all the time does very little except devalue your product.
With a 5
day KDP

promo and $ 100 dollars in targeted ads, you can have your book read by 10,000 readers.
Also, I spend more than that promoting my KDP
Select free
days (but I get around 10 downloads for every dollar I spend on the top
promos, so Amazon Giveaways are not a good bang for the buck versus KDP
Select free
days, if you have that option.
Another advantage of
Select and
promo days over permafree is that the
Select book is generating real sales outside of its
promo period, so it's usually much more visible in the Amazon catalog, and when it flips to free, many more people will find it.
