In the late nineteenth and
early twentieth centuries,
several waves of Orthodox immigration arrived nearly simultaneously in America, and they brought with them their own
traditions, customs and clergy.
In our
earlier sections, we have noted that F.C. Burkitt, Arthur Voobus and
several other historians have shown that the emphasis on celibacy and abstinence from marriage belonged to an authentic
tradition of the Syrian church till the fourth century.
