Shelter Medicine Program is pleased to announce five tuition reimbursement scholarships have been awarded for students who completed the summer
Shelter Medicine course, Integrating Veterinary
Medicine with
Shelter Systems.

Shelter Medicine Program and founder of Operation Catnip, was currently teaching a
course on community cat management.

course is composed of three short sessions from the NAVC Conference 2016's Association of
Shelter Veterinarians:
Shelter Medicine Program track.Urethral Obstructions: New Ways to Manage: Briefly reviews case selection and medical management of acute and chronic urethral obstruction in cats.
While at school, she was lucky to participate in study abroad
programs, taking
courses including wildlife immobilization in South Africa, elephant and zoo
medicine in Thailand, and public health and
shelter medicine in Jordan.
The goal of this
program is to fill an existing curriculum gap in
shelter medicine by providing quality online
courses for veterinary professionals, animal welfare professionals, and students.

After seeing an ad for the University of Florida (UF) online
shelter medicine course on Facebook, she contacted the
program to see if it was open to a non-veterinarian.
During the
course of a 2008 evaluation by the UC Davis
shelter medicine program, the SFSPCA discovered that nearly 30 percent of San Francisco dog owners had purchased their pets online from out of state.
Today, the Maddie's
Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida has a record
course enrollment of 427 students, with 111 having completed the Maddie's Certificate
programs.
Topics in this
course may include the following: veterinary forensic
medicine,
shelter metrics for population health, guidelines for effective foster care and transport
programs, physical structure and health in
shelters, and management of medical problems in
shelter environment.
Our Online Graduate Certificate extends the reach of our
program to veterinarians and veterinary students across the country, offering the opportunity for intensive training in three core
courses that were designed to explore the latest and best knowledge in
shelter medicine while cultivating the critical thinking skills necessary to run a successful medical
program in an animal
shelter.
Spay / neuter surgery
courses are increasingly important as a form of service learning for veterinary students, though they are not typically aimed at preparing veterinarians prepared to excel in high - quality, high - volume surgical
programs, as is often expected in
shelter medicine.
