This is even more of a shame when considering how badly the franchise needs a shake - up and a change of pace, but based on what I played,

What's interesting, though, is that it
seems Sledgehammer have been teasing this setting for their upcoming shooter for a long time - since Advanced Warfare first came out, in fact.
Recently, promotional images were leaked for
Sledgehammer's upcoming Call of Duty 2017 that
seemed to suggest that for the first time since 2008's Treyarch developed World at War, the series will be returning to a World War II setting.
Seeing all of these rumors and leak information, it
seems like
Sledgehammer Games will be the first in a while to feature a Call of Duty Game that's taking place in the past
Advanced Warfare executes the formula competently while adding a handful of bells and whistles like mechs, laser cannons, and double jumps; but
Sledgehammer Games
seems reluctant to really cut loose and push the setting to its fullest potential, making Advanced Warfare a solid but ultimately unexciting entry in the series.
This
seems to be no more of a problem as
Sledgehammer Games took it upon themselves to revive this dying franchise.
In GameSpot's session with
Sledgehammer Games, it looks like a lot of that historical research has gone into doing more than simply ensuring guns, vehicles and environments
seem true - to - life.
For now it
seems Sledgehammer certainly understands the strengths of the Modern Warfare campaign missions.
(for example Hollands clever use of glass houses is very productive agriculture but has low fertliser inputs etc) Low tech
seems over simplistic and a
sledgehammer.
