The evidence to suggest that cry it out, or indeed any
sleep training method, is
in anyway psychologically harmful simply doesn't exist
in any reliable or accurate study.

This week someone got
in touch with me to talk about a new study
in the journal Pediatrics, which suggests that there's no long - term harm associated with certain
methods of
sleep training.
The Ferber
method is not the only option for parents interested
in sleep training.
They don't look at what sort of
sleep methods were
in place prior to 7 months and from what I read, some of the parents did
sleep training where they stayed
in the room with the child.
When I first read about
sleep training (when baby was about five months old), I was horrified at the thought, but at first I could only find supportive descriptions of it, or rather of different
methods of controlled crying, mostly involving some presence
in the room (for example, sitting next to the cot, then a couple of days later sitting next to the door, sitting at the other side of the open door, & c.).
There are many
sleep program options and specific
sleep training method approaches to choose from
in designing an effective
sleep training plan.
It will always be your decision on what
method we use, my job is to make sure you are implementing that
method properly and that we achieve success
in your
sleep training goals.
We can say that there aren't any apparent negative long - term effects
in this case, but this doesn't mean that would be the case for any
sleep training method with any baby.

in this post), several advocating for
sleep training methods that I wasn't comfortable with.

In general, I am philosophically opposed to crying based
sleep training methods and I do think there are better
methods, although I understand the temptation.
While actually engaging
in the
methods of
sleep training, I experienced a deep sense of what each of them needed as individuals
in a very focused and intense way.
What I read
in that is that flexibility is key, and that is often missing from
sleep training methods.
In other words, the newer
sleep training «CIO»
methods don't involve letting your baby sob all night without some degree of comfort and attention from you.

There is one aspect of the Babywise
method that I simply and utterly can not - will not - stand
in agreement with, nor am I able to close this series without speaking to it: cry - it - out infant

The «cry it out»
method of

in general, it means putting your baby down to
sleep awake and letting him or her cry for a set amount of time before soothing the baby.
