snowy plovers consists primarily of coastal beaches, sandbars, sand dunes, and river - mouths, above the high tide line — making Ocean Beach and Crissy Field prime real estate for overwintering and finding their food source (small insects and beach invertebrates).
Under the 1982 permit, state parks had 18 months to determine the number of vehicles the park can handle daily, and establish a permanent entrance to minimize damage to
habitat for federally endangered steelhead trout and two species of birds: the Western
snowy plover and the California least tern.
Outdoor volunteer activities include
habitat restoration, monitoring harbor seals, helping out at Kule Loklo or the Morgan Horse Ranch, repairing trails, and educating visitors about elephant seals,
snowy plovers and tule elk, amongst other opportunities.
