All are pulled from three different series: «Society Portraits» (Sherman as UES women battling age with plastic surgery), the «History Portraits» (Sherman as Renaissance and Rococo figures) and the seminal «Centerfolds» series (Sherman as a modern version of the reclining woman but all lost in private moments as opposed to, you know, tugging at a bikini string).
Pastel Portraits gives visitors the unusual opportunity to view these exquisite works in a museum exhibition, which includes loans from the Princeton University Art Museum and the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, as well as from the Frick Collection, Pierpont Morgan Library, and New - York Historical Society, New York, and several private collections.
Newsha Takavolian, a female photojournalist from Tehran, also addresses women's roles in Iranian society in her potent series of portraits, Mothers of Martyrs.
Inspired by the romanticism of Monet and Gainsborough's regal «society» portraits of the late 18th century aristocracy, he celebrates the poise and style of Monique from various perspectives.
«So this is the second show [at David Zwirner London]-- and I've always been fascinated by Britain for several reasons, for example it is one of the last «class societies» — although I don't know how long it will still go on — but I once tackled that subject in a small show, the first white cube show that I did called «Spelndid Isolation», and one of the portraits in that show was also based on Henry Draper [American doctor, amateur astronomer, and pioneer of astrophotography]-- these three works in front of you [portraits: «William Robertson», 2014, «John Robison», 2014, and «John Playfair», 2014] are derived from the paintings in the professors room at University of Edinburgh.
