In our 2015 regulatory round - up (here), we described the ongoing dispute arising in the Trinity Western cases, where three professional regulatory bodies —
law societies in three provinces (B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia)-- refused to accredit a religious university which required that
students sign a «community covenant» requiring that they abstain from sexual intimacy outside
of marriage between one man and one woman.

of TWU's
law school from entering the legal profession in Nova Scotia, solely because
of the
law students» choice to associate together in a community that adheres to traditional Christian beliefs and practices.

Because
of the forces that are greatly increasing the volume
of laws and their complexity, people are progressively less able to solve their legal problems by themselves, and are forced to accept
law society programs that «cut costs by cutting competence» (e.g.,
law students, paralegals, self - help, and «unbundling»
of legal services).
Based on my own experiences working within a
law society and in the field
of legal malpractice insurance, I'm not sure that this priority has always been sufficiently emphasized in lawyer training and I was therefore quite pleased to hear that

students were both this week hearing
of the importance
of integrity in their professional lives.

On 25 January 2017, the
Society of Black Lawyers (SBL), the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) and the Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples» Rights (ACC) have joined hands in providing opportunities to African and Diaspora lawyers and
law students to enrich their experience through internships in Africa, UK and the USA.
However, in all
of these reviews, the
Law Society has never actually examined the actual working conditions
of articling
students.
Collectively, lawyers are encouraged to enhance the profession through activities such as: (a) sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues and
students informally in day - to - day practice as well as through contribution to professional journals and publications, support
of law school projects and participation in panel discussions, legal education seminars, bar admission courses and university lectures; (b) participating in legal aid and community legal services programs or providing legal services on a pro bono basis; (c) filling elected and volunteer positions with the
Society; (d) acting as directors, officers and members
of local, provincial, national and international bar associations and their various committees and sections; and (e) acting as directors, officers and members
of non-profit or charitable organizations.
Sossin says while the school grants
students the right to not be penalized academically if they choose not to participate in classes, it will be up to the
law society, not the school, to address the situation
of students delayed because
of the strike.
Others have added an ombudsperson (usually an outside contractor, not a
law society employee) to provide neutral and confidential assistance to lawyers, articling
students, and support staff who want help resolving complaints
of discrimination or harassment.

Society to recognize the pro bono legal services provided their
students.
To qualify for membership in either school's Pro Bono
