(To have an unpopular opinion, I actually really enjoyed Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice.)

When you look at Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice from a pure graphical and game design perspective — there is very little wrong with it (at least from what I played).

Here's the thing about Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, if you enjoy the gameplay found in modern Sonic games, then there's a strong chance that you will also enjoy this.

For example, in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice there were spike pits that you get across just by constantly tapping the jump button; Sonic would jump, double jump and then lock - on to a breakable rock on the other side.

Anyway while they're stuck to their one console, I'll be playing games like The Legend Of Zelda, Bayonetta 2, Devil's Third, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox, Fatal Frame - The Black Hair Shrine Maiden (hopefully it comes to US), Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Sonic Boom - Rise Of Lyric, etc., on my Wii U and The Evil Within, Assassin's Creed Unity, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, Batman Arkham Knight, etc., on my PS4.

The foundations for a successful, new take on Sonic are present in Shattered Crystal, and with just a little more time and tweaking, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice could very well be a solid game to tide us all over before Sonic Mania is released in 2017.

If not, at least fans will have at least one new Sonic game this year courtesy of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, the Nintendo 3DS follow - up to Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

Fire & Ice was supposed to be the game that turned it all around for the universally despised Boom brand, but it unfortunately only adds to the list of things to hate about this version of Sonic and friends.
