We knew from the outset that Sonic Forces didn't stand a chance, this much was clear.
Top to bottom, Sonic Forces didn't click for me, and even now, I stand by that.

A mediocre platformer at best,
Sonic Forces manages to
do nothing more than reinforce long held stereotypes against Sega's beloved blue blur.
Most of the people I spoke to at Summer of
Sonic about
Sonic Boom shared the same sentiment that I
did about the powers - saying it felt
forced, broke the flow of the game and made it feel linear, especially in comparison to
Sonic Mania.

We don't really know what's going on in this new Japanese story trailer for
Sonic Forces, but it makes a case for the series» ever - expanding number of characters.

Unlike some lesser games in the franchise, there's nothing cynical about
Sonic Forces — I felt like
Sonic Team was
doing their best to entertain me every minute I was playing.
Sonic Forces» story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I have to admit, I found the game's writing less grating than most other recent
Sonic entries.
And, shock of shocks, there's not a loot box in sight — in fact,
Sonic Forces includes a «missions» list that makes it very clear exactly what you need to
do to earn new threads.
I won't say
Forces is about making
Sonic relevant again because I don't think that is quite the right term, but we understand we have a flagship IP, this brand powerhouse that SEGA wants to get back to what it should be.
We get the impression that
Sonic Team wanted
Forces to be the Best
Sonic Game Ever, with a Greatest Hits package of everything good in the series, but they didn't have the time, money or talent to accomplish this.

Despite the fact no review copies & keys are being sent out, reviews for
Sonic Forces are starting to come in and it is not off to a good start as yet again negativity surrounds it, but we
do have our own review on the way, due to purchasing an early copy and let's just say we are of a different mind - set to Polygon, but you'll have to wait a little longer before you can see it.

While we don't have specific figures on the sales of
Sonic Forces, it
does seem that SEGA is happy with the game's reception at retail.

They
do like the design of
Sonic Forces as we have presented it, but we're also listening to a lot of the people saying they want that classic gameplay element back.
SEGA certainly
does love their
Sonic memes, so it's no surprise to see them plopping it into
Forces.
What my team wanted to
do with
Sonic Forces is really expand on the game design and make something different and new for the
Sonic Forces world, which is more modern.
But you
do get several role play games, a hefty dose of
Sonic, all three Streets of Rage, all four pre-online Phantasy star games, the first having been released on the Master System, Shining
Force 1 and 2 and Shining in the Darkness as well as others.
It's still a fun game for
Sonic fans, and I don't regret playing it, but I was hoping it would be the return to
force that 3D
Sonic needed.

does show signs of potential.

Full disclosure: I've never been much for collecting items in games, besides the basic «get coin» mechanic first realized in Mario and
Sonic games, which basically
force you to get coins by allowing you to
do little else besides survive environment and enemy obstacles (not to mention get extra lives for coin collecting).
Does Sonic Forces need a bonus edition?
While Infinite was surely the highlight, the entire
Sonic Forces cast
did an impeccable job of acting out their characters.
While
Sonic Forces has commendable voice acting, that doesn't save it from its poorly written dialogue.
Players will notice in levels that modern
Sonic will join the custom hero as a playable and switchable character, and while that's exciting, this option lends even more credit to what could be
done with
Forces if an online co-op or multiplayer mode was introduced.
No doubt the PS4 runs
Sonic Forces better, but I don't have one.
Just how it sounds - if you want a bit of consistency, or just think chubby Classic
Sonic looks out of place in the world of
Sonic Forces (he totally
does), you can use this mod to replace him in all the Classic levels with Modern
Sonic.

It almost seems as if
Sonic Forces is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis and it doesn't really know what game it wants to be.
There are bonus levels that can be unlocked along the way too and there are daily challenges to go through, but despite these little extras I didn't feel inclined to re-visit
Sonic Forces after I had finished the main campaign.
