The side scrolling parts of the levels though were a lot more fun and engaging with their design being a nod to the classic
Sonic games of old capturing that fluent, but still fast paced gameplay style that has made the series so famous.
These days this stuff is often sold to us as DLC or taken out entirely because of achievements and all that stuff, but Sonic Mania doesn't mess about: it has a classic level select cheat like
the Sonic games of old, plus unlocks both familiar and all - new to the classic Sonic games.
Not exact matches
In an interview with Metro's GameCentral, Takashi Iizuka boasted confidence about both Mania and Forces, but there's a catch: Both
games are targeted at different demographics —
older fans who prefer 2D
Sonic, and younger fans who like 3D
Sonic (I'm on the latter side)-- but only the success
of Mania might determine the path
Sonic will take from there on in.
Sonic 4 Episode 1 is sure to bring back some fond memories for us
older gamers that cherished our Sega Genesis (Mega drive for those
of you outside
of the States) as well as bring new memories for those that haven't had the pleasure
of playing the originals.
Whether you like the
old Sonic games or the new ones, or even if you've never played one before,
Sonic Mania holds plenty
of fun for everyone.
A love letter to the
old days featuring both remixed classic levels and all - new zones, the greatest compliment that can be paid to
Sonic Mania is to say that it truly does feel like another
game that fell right out
of Sonic Team in the mid 90s.
For a
game that is four years
old Sonic Team did not do a half bad job
of trying to update it.
In practice this assemblage
of ideas both
old and new carries promise, but in execution, well, Lost World carries itself like any other
Sonic game.
I am a huge fan
of some
of the
older Sonic titles that really competed with the Nintendo
games like Mario.
Bubble Bobble,
Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis version), Street Fighter II, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina
Of Time are all in my top 10 favourite
games list — and they're all over 15 years
old!
It has a great blend
of old and new and most definitely promises a trip down memory lane, but although I would never say the
game is overrated as it is pretty close to perfect for a 2D
Sonic game, I do believe its nostalgia factor is overhyping this
game.
I understand the franchise needs a bit
of a shake up but the
old system was present in both the good
Sonic games and the not so good ones.

of Sonic's newer
games are received less well than his
older games (with the rare nostalgia - heavy exception).

old - school with its presentation, it's also going back to the days
of a fully - featured
game at a single price!

Sonic's 25th anniversary last year, Iizuka received a task to deliver some sort
of product - the target was «dormant fans» who used to play the SEGA Genesis, but haven't really played any
games since - Iizuka met Christian Whitehead, which lead to the creation
of Sonic Mania - there was talk
of another port, but Iizuka thought fans would desire something new from the
old games - this is the first time Iizuka partnered with a team
of devs spread across various countries - Iizuka said this team had a greater passion to create - this was in comparison to companies that set decisions on a pre-determined schedule (in meetings, etc)- the team had so many features they still wanted to add after the beta version was complete - since there were only a few spots with text that needed to be localized, they could bring the
game to more places quicker - the
game has Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish support - the Studiopolis stage is included due to receiving the most requests from the
Sonic Mania development team - Iizuka actually considered reducing the amount
of stages at one point in order to meet the development schedule -
Sonic Mania doesn't really have much in the way
of cut content like scrapped stages - since
Sonic Mania was only distributed digitally, the team was able to continue working very close leading up to launch - this let them put in practically all ideas, and there are currently no plans for DLC - Iizuka recommended Flying Battery Zone for inclusion becaues he likes the music - he also likes when the player goes inside and outside the ship - Iizuka likes Mirage Saloon because the stage structure will be different depending on the player character chosen - Puyo Puyo gameplay was added because there was a Puyo Puyo
game released in the west for the SEGA Genesis - this
game was originally called «Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine», and the team thought it would make a fun boss battle - Iizuka didn't have plans to feature Blue Sphere in the special stages - the Blue Sphere special stages were brought over to Mania as a test, but ended up staying for the final
game - the team felt the need to continuously connect stages from various eras, which is doe with the Phantom Ruby story - for
Sonic Mania, it was decided that the technological limit would be set at SEGA CD, - this is higher than the Genesis but lower than Saturn - in creating a SEGA CD - grade special stage, they would intentionally make SEGA CD - grade polygons
Sure, the
game insists on having its unique bunch
of characters speaking by taking a few similar sounds and mashing them together into a grating mess just like the used to do back in the good
old days, but Yooka and Laylee themselves are wonderfully animated, from the way Yooka covers his ears before a
sonic attack or how Laylee runs on top
of Yooka while Yooka rolls.
While many
older games have aged badly, the four SEGA
Sonic titles are amongst my favourite to return to for a dose
of -LSB-...]
Sure, it stops the
game becoming frustrating if you want to dress up as Yoshi for a while or listen to some very
old Sonic music, but it also removes any challenging aspects
of the unlockables.

game is basically fun for the sake
of Nostalgia, if you're a fan

of the animations feel very much like an
old Sonic game, especially when doing the lock - on attacks or going through loops.
It's all - too - common for a developer to revisit an
old game and simply enhance it to work with newer hardware, but
Sonic Mania is a passion project that gathers the best bits
of one
of gaming's most recognisable mascots and squeezes them all into one neat bundle
of nostalgia and joy.
After the shock and curiosity
of the notion
of old - time rivals Super Mario and
Sonic the Hedgehog appearing in the same video
game wore off after the release
of Mario &
Sonic at the Olympic Games back in 2008, most
of us moved on from the casual sports minigame franchise that saw the duo (and their friends) competing in every Olympics since.

of sonic) I just do nt understand how people get so worked up over 3 seconds
of gameplay when it was probably just a demo or early testing for the
game.
I don't have to see 3 seconds
of game footage to automatically know it fails in execution, since this
game was targeted to the
old schools fans and using a Next Gen
Sonic in the original universe doesn't gel.
But I have a feeling that even if this
game were a 16 - bit return to glory, there would still be boatloads
of people complaining about
Sonic's goddamn eye - color, or the fact that Sega chose to create new sprites instead
of recycling data almost twenty years
old.
