Sonic Mania has become one
of the highest rated
Sonic games in the
past two decades, so it's good to see the
game finally hitting the 1 million mark.
The plot
of this
Sonic game, much like
past Sonic games, is simple.
Crafted by people with experience creating their own fangames in the
past and making polished ports
of the classic
games themselves in more recent years,
Sonic Mania is a realization
of what
Sonic was and what it can still be.
Sonic Forces is a confident
game, serving up a story and stages that go for broke while dodging the pitfalls
of the
past.
Personally,
Sonic Mania edges out
Sonic CD for me because I was never that big
of a fan
of the time - traveling aspect in
Sonic CD, and Mania builds upon every classic
Sonic game that came before it while also not forgetting its
past, if that makes any sense whatsoever.
Now, to say that the Super
Sonic DLC caused a bit
of an uproar I think is pretty fair, and a lot
of people going, «Hey, you know, this was always free in
past games, why isn't it free here?»
Fortunately, thanks to the fast - paced nature
of Sonic Mania and the lack
of repetition in its elements, once you're
past a part
of the
game you don't enjoy you'll never have to worry about it cropping up again.
Most people have gone
past caring about 3rd party multiplats all they do is lower the value
of your console in the long run as opposed to quality 3rd party exclusives like
Sonic BOOM, Bayonetta2, Hyrule Warriors, ect and 1st party
games that are just the best.
There was a time in the
past when
Sonic used to compete with Mario not just in sales, but also in term
of the quality
of the
games.
We wanted to make sure that the fans don't hurt at all, so we kind
of made the right move on this one, especially because a lot
of you guys have seen this stuff in the
past and gone, «Super
Sonic kind
of should be a key part
of the
games, it should be kind
of a core part
of it.»
Now, to say that the Super
Sonic DLC caused a bit

There may be some impressions that

of requests from fans to have their own original characters appear in
Sonic games - while that couldn't happen,
Sonic Forces» custom character recognizes that fan desire - the avatar was created with the idea
of «making straight high - speed action» - this time the concept is that all three styles (Modern, Classic, Avatar) would be high - speed based - make selections for the face, mouth, body color, and gender
of custom characters - each species will also have their own unique skills, such as wolves being able to pull nearby rings - you can't change custom characters in the middle

game is a definite blast from the
past, and I only hope that this is the start
of a new trend for
Sonic — finally remembering why he used to be so good.
Sonic Lost World is a great way to introduce your children to one
of the most recognizable
game mascots
of the
past.

It does have an all star cast though as each
of the main characters from
past Sonic games make an appearance at some point throughout the story in some way shape or form.
Whether you're a long - time hedgehog aficionado looking to enjoy a favorite moment from
Sonic's
past, or a brand - new player who wants to join in on the fun, there's no better place to start than with one
of Sonic's most celebrated
games,
Sonic CD.»
However, those who have played
past iterations
of Sonic, preferably the Genesis classics, should proceed with caution, as many
of the things that made
Sonic great are absent in this latest outing, not to mention the $ 15 price tag is somewhat steep for a
game served up across several episodes.
It's a shame then that as we near the release
of Sonic Mania, a
game that is looking to not just emulate
past glories, but celebrates
Sonic in his best and purest form, that there is, yet again, no word on any
Sonic 3 nostalgia.

of the trailer, we're shown that
Sonic can transform into Super
Sonic, something we've seen in
games since the 16 - bit days.Other than attacks, we see
Sonic can fly the Tornado, and drive his car from
past games.
Sonic Forces is quite possibly the strangest hybrid
of past Sonic games that I have ever played when it comes to the gameplay.
Actually, it's confession time, and I never really played
Sonic Adventure until just this
past year or so, when I snagged a Dreamcast from our incredible
game room and brushed up on some
of the classics.
The look and feel
of past Sonic games is also replicated in
Sonic Mania's sound as well, with the wheeps, bleeps and bloops
of the classic
games coming through in a great fashion and even the new zones sound right at home.
This
past week, GR talked up (what else) the new direction for
Sonic the Hedgehog with
Sonic Boom, ran down the full ins and outs
of the new Smash Bros
game from Nintendo and published a little something about a topic called video
game linearity.
Zones like Mirage Saloon and Studiopolis continually borrow small elements from
past Sonic games (as do all the levels) but they help to give them their own character and personality, they're not just dumped in for fan amusement, but created and placed in such a way that it fits the atmosphere
of the level.

of what Sega has done to
Sonic in the
past, and I do know that they can do much much better than they have but some helpful criticism would be nice intend
of just bashing them about how much they screw up, hell I have high hopes for this
game and I want them to get it right but I'm seeing more complaints than suggestions.
If you have played the
past two
Sonic Dash
games,
Sonic Forces: Speed Battle is essentially an online multiplayer version
of Sonic Dash with characters and settings from
Sonic Forces.
It's disheartening to me that all
of my excitement amounted to an underwhelming at worst, moderate at best
game because I know
Sonic Team has done better in the
past.
Considering the amount
of exclusive to Wii
Sonic games that have come out in the
past, especially quality ones like Colours.
UPDATE: Over on the
Sonic Retro forums, Christian «Taxman» Whitehead has confirmed that he is behind the project, and that iOS users who already bought the
past release
of the
game will receive the remastering as a free update.
Past games like Colors, Generations and Lost World were completely separate, both in canon and production, and as such I think it is unfair to say that the failings
of Sonic Boom: Rise
of Lyric should sully the main brand.
Sonic Forces is a confident

of the zones are redesigns
of past Sonic areas, which gives the
game a decent sense
of world building, which
Sonic has done over the
past 25 years with the series» numerous cast
of characters, and some
of the favorites reappearing in the
game.
However, looking back on free DLCs for
past Monster Hunter entries for the 3DS, would show that they consisted
of gear and items based on some other
game franchises such as Mario,
Sonic, and Zelda, among others.
