The Classic
Sonic stages may not stack up to anything from Sonic Mania (or even Generations, for that matter), but at least they actually feel like there's something to them.
The game is indeed fast, the classic
sonic stages are indeed 2D and the scripted cinematics in - between levels are indeed fun to look at.
Shadow will also be available to play in many of the game's Modern
Sonic stages as an added bonus.
As Modern Sonic the levels play a lot like recent 3D Sonic games, 2D Classic
Sonic stages resemble the Sega Genesis era, and the Avatar stages are a mixture of platforming and shooting.
The Classic
Sonic stages are probably the best, as the little guy moves more slowly and precisely, allowing for more intricate platforming and level design.
For
the Sonic stages it mixes up the gameplay and never gets stale, it may have aged pretty badly but the freedom it gave at the time in its Adventure Fields is something I've missed since.
The fact that the game is a little under three hours long with thirty stages makes me believe that the Classic
Sonic stages were added to pad the game, but even if it were cut by a third, I'd probably enjoy the smoother pace that would have occurred had the classic stages been excised.
However, whereas the Classic
Sonic stages were unneeded, these stages were a mix of joy and disappointment.
I didn't mind their inclusion, and I wish the game had focused solely on the modern styles rather than taking a break with classic
Sonic stages.
The Sonic stages work most like the classic ones, as you battle your way through a level collecting rings, whereas the Tails stages that follow have their own unique twist, as you race against Sonic to be the first to catch Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic stages since the Werehog is so slow and every path is laid out easily for him.
While he didn't give a specific number, Takashi mentioned that the game has the largest amount of 2D
Sonic stages ever.
The Modern
Sonic stages feel mostly the same, with the only noticeable change being that the areas you speed through feel slightly narrowed, which doesn't allow much room for freely choosing your direction or using the shoulder buttons to change lines in mid run.
Then there are the modern
Sonic stages, which see you blasting through enormous, baroque piles of terrain at impossible velocities, calling on an arsenal of boosts, homing slams, ground pounds, slides, wall - kicks and double - jumps to bridge the fleeting pauses between slides and launch pads.
The only good things in Adventure 2 are the Sonic / Shadow speed stages and even then they are inferior to
the Sonic stages in Adventure as they got rid of multiple pathways and made the stages more linear and compact.
Besides Avatar stages which is basically just modern
sonic stages with even more WISPS it lacks new ideas.
Floor it in, say, third and as it swells and pulls from a few hundred low, rumbling rpm to a top - end howl it goes through a whole host of
sonic stages, the most curious of which sounds something like a helicopter taking off.
While he didn't give a specific number, Takashi mentioned that the game has the largest amount of 2D
Sonic stages ever.
Episode Shadow focuses on a backstory with Shadow and Infinite (the game's mysterious antagonist), including three Shadow stages, the ability to replay as Shadow across 10 Modern
Sonic stages, plus you'll also receive a Shadow costume for your Hero Character.
They often take inspiration from classics, while introducing enough new to make these feel like genuine 90s era
Sonic stages that have only just been discovered.
It includes three additional stages, and allows you to replay over 10 Modern
Sonic stages as Shadow.
Classic
Sonic stages will be returning in the old - school 2D side - scroller, but are said to have a twist on them.
A complete mess from a gameplay point if view, since that way they made sure there is not one good and proper
