My reasoning is that most people get the Preferred card for the 2X points on all travel and dining,

as the flexible and nearly instant
transfers to a variety of good travel
partners such
as United, Hyatt, and
Southwest.
You can

Unlike other domestic carriers such
as United, Delta, Jet Blue, and
Southwest, American is not a
transfer partner to any major rewards program (SPG aside).
These points are incredibly valuable since you can either use them to book travel directly through the online portal or you can
transfer them to one of their rewards
partners such
as United,
Southwest or British Airways where they become true frequent flyer miles in those programs.
There are some other
transfer partners that do count (such
as Wyndham and other hotels), and bonuses earned from
Southwest credit cards do count.
I also hope that
Southwest gets added
as a
transfer partner since Chase manages their credit card portfolio
as well.
However, you can further maximize the bonus by
transferring UR points to other
partners such
as United,
Southwest and many more.
If you only choose one program we recommend Chase Ultimate Rewards
as they currently have the best
transfer partners available to meet most travel needs: United, British Airways,
Southwest, and Korean Air.
The points you earn are both valuable and flexible since you can use them to book travel right through the rewards site or you can
transfer them to one of their rewards
partners such
as Southwest, United or Hyatt.
