If you can find
award space on Delta or Alaska Airlines on the outbound flight but not on the dates you need to return, you could book a one - way
award with Flying Blue and a one - way
award on United Airlines or American Airlines with another
program.
Landing a premium class
award ticket in First or Business class on Singapore has traditionally been a difficult task for North American points and miles collectors due to the common Singapore Airlines practice of offering first and business class
award space almost solely to members of their own KrisFlyer
program.
This post discusses how to use the Aeroplan to search for
award space on Star Alliance carriers, whether you plan to book there or take that information to book through another
program.
You don't have to worry about blackout dates or limited
award space, which can be a problem with traditional airline frequent flyer
programs.
This is not only a better deal (if available) but also reflects the
award space provided to other partners if you decide to book through a different loyalty
program.
Although these are definitely not mainstream
programs for frequent flyers based in the United States,
programs that everyone else isn't searching sometimes have the most
award space.
If you are more flexible and using a partner
program to book, start looking for Lufthansa first class
award space 15 days prior to your departure.
Not everyone wants to take the long way, and fortunately United is one of the best
programs for booking travel to Asia given the abundant
award space.
While this is more of an issue with first class
award space, you should also note that the Asia Miles
program does have increased access to
award space for business class.
Despite the
program participation restrictions I mentioned earlier, MileWise searches
award space using points from the following
programs:
This is a positive change to the
program since it will incentivize those who can't make a flight from holding the
award space that others could use.
This is the airline frequent flyer
program your miles are in — not the airline you want to fly on, or the alliance members you'll search for
award space.
If SAAver level
award space is available on American Airlines, you could transfer 20,000 points to Cathay Pacific's Asia Miles
program to book the flight.
If Saver
Award space is available on United Airlines, you could transfer 25,000 miles to Singapore Airlines» KrisFlyer
program to book the United flight.
That means once you start accumulating your miles with one
program, you have to hope you'll find
award space with that same
program.
To clear things up, we've put together a comprehensive resource that shows you where to search for
award space when using some of the most popular frequent flyer
programs.
Each airline loyalty
program has its own little quirks to be aware of when searching for
award space.
Additionally, Asia Miles has access to more
award space, making it much easier to book through this
program.
If you can find
award space on Delta or Alaska Airlines on the outbound flight but not on the dates you need to return, you could book a one - way
award with Flying Blue and a one - way
award on United Airlines or American Airlines with another
program.
Qantas is also a partner of both
programs, although they are historically more restrictive when releasing
award space.
You'll continue to have access to
award space when using miles in a different frequent flyer
program.
By earning miles with these loyalty
programs I have access to more
award space on their flights, as well as the same saver - level
award space that exists on United and other Star Alliance partners.
This is unfortunate because only the cheapest
awards on a given route are made available to partners — either other airlines releasing
award space to Delta customers or
awards that Delta might let you book with another
program.
Transferable points let you find the
award space first, then move them to the
program where they make the most sense.
If you will use Qantas to find
award space for a ticket that you'll book with another
program, it would be much better to see Qatar Airways in this example.
Using miles for travel is easier than spending time to search for
award space with traditional loyalty
programs.
Finally, links are provided next to each loyalty
program to help you find
award space and book a ticket.
(In a confusing twist, most airline
programs use the word «saver» to indicate partner
award space, while British Airways uses «peak.»)
