The Texas Ten
Step Program is a method to improve
maternity care practices in birthing facilities.
A set of
maternity care practices has been identified that, when implemented together, results in better breastfeeding outcomes.The Baby - Friendly Hospital Initiative established by WHO and UNICEF in 1991 includes these
maternity practices, which are known as the Ten
Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
A full description of PROBIT's design and methods has been published elsewhere.17 In brief, 31
maternity hospitals and their affiliated polyclinics (where children are followed for routine health
care) were randomized either to receive a breastfeeding promotion intervention modelled on the 10
steps to successful breastfeeding of the WHO / UNICEF Baby - Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) or to continue the
maternity hospital and polyclinic
practices in effect at the time of randomization.
Effectiveness: When old
practices are replaced with the Ten
Steps, facilities are well - positioned to improve their performance in measures such as those assessed by the CDC's
Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and
Care survey and the Joint Commission's Perinatal
Care Core Measure Set.
CDC analyzed data from 2007 (baseline), 2009, 2011, and 2013 to describe trends in the prevalence of facilities using
maternity care policies and
practices that are consistent with the Ten
Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
These data were analyzed for 10 mPINC indicators for recommended
maternity care practices * from the World Health Organization / United Nations Children's Fund's Ten
Steps to Successful Breastfeeding (5).
Designed to educate «grandmothers - to - be» on up - to - date
maternity care, birth
practices and infant parenting, it is also designed as the first
step in building bridges of love, understanding and communication between expectant mothers and the grandmother - to - be.
